On Wednesday evening, Lend a hand to Hugo Founder Luke Williams facilitated four sessions with eight football teams at the 2018 AFL Inclusion Carnival.
Teams representing all states and territories from around Australia are currently in Launceston taking part in the carnival, which concludes in Launceston this Saturday. In its fifth season, the competition sees players with an intellectual disability playing Australian Rules Football at state level.
Whilst the competition is designed for football, on Wednesday night, players were exposed to education sessions. By teaming up with the AFL, Lend a hand to Hugo's sessions with the group/s were planned and presented in a slightly different way than usual. In twenty-five minute blocks, the charity placed emphasis on four different focus areas:
1) Creating an inclusive team culture; and setting personal values;
2) Awareness around the use of appropriate language;
3) Inspiring the next generation of sportspeople with a disability;
4) The effective use of social media.
Players from all states and territories were actively engaged, with many providing feedback to Lend a hand to Hugo around what messages we should be portraying throughout workshops in schools and sporting clubs.
The carnival wraps up on Saturday, with two Grand Finals to be played as curtain raisers ahead of the Hawthorn v Gold Coast AFL clash at the University of Tasmania Stadium, Launceston.
